THE DELAY in opening of the Manikbag overbridge has raised residents, ire so much so that a group of locals staged a demonstration asking for the opening of the bridge, today.

The municipal authorities acutely feeling the need for an overbridge on the busy intersection frequented with traffic jams conducted a technical feasibility survey and in the name of alleviating the traffic problem of commuters passing through the area sanctioned the project.

The construction work that began in 2003-04 got completed after a long delay of one and a half years. The Gujarat (Ahmedabad) based company that had been given the contract for constructing the bridge had to stop work in between due to non-payment and inordinate delays in release of funds by the municipal authorities.

Meanwhile, the residents had to bear with the necessary land acquisition, noise and pollution that continued to haunt them for the duration of the period of construction.

The municipal authorities feeling elated on the completion of the three pronged Manikbagh overbridge had decided to get it inaugurated by former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee but as his dates were unavailable the inauguration was suspended until it was decided that it be inaugurated by the Chief Minister.

However, the State saw the change of power from the hands of Babulal Gaur to Shivraj Singh Chauhan and the present incumbent has still to take time out from his busy schedule to do the honours and cut the ribbon, until then the bridge standing tall in all its glory would remain virgin to traffic and the predicament of the people would remain as it was before its construction.
