Dempo upset Army XI in Durand Cup football

Dempo Sports Club of Goa upset defending champions Army XI by 2-1 in a quarter-final league match of the 119th Osian's Durand Cup at the Ambedkar Stadiumat the Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday.

In the other match of the day, Jagatjit Cotton Textile (JCT) Mills of Phagwara thrashed Kingfisher East Bengal by 4-0.

In the first match, action started from the beginning and Anthony Pereira of Dempo fired the first goal as early as the sixth minute. N. Guernilal of Army brought his team at par two minutes later.

Two Army XI players were awarded yellow cards - Birendra Bodra in the 57th minute and Thirunavakarsu in the 67th minute. Even as they were trying to cope with the situation, Joaqim Abranches of Dempo netted a goal in the 89th minute. This strike turned out to be enough to cause an upset win.

In the second match, Praveen Kumar of JCT scored the first goal in the 22nd minute. Sunday Ambrose took the team 2-0 up with a fine effort in the 63rd minute.

JCT struck the third goal through Adebayo Tokunbo and the fourth goal came courtesy the opposition as M. Suresh knocked the ball into his own goal to seal his team's fate.

On Thursday, Mahindra United will play Sporting Clube de Goa and then Mohun Bagan will meet Air India.
