As a result about two dozen sub-inspectors posted in all the four districts under the range - Allahabad, Fatehpur, Kaushambi and Pratapgarh - are a disenchanted lot. They are feeling relegated to the background despite claiming to possess requisite standard as fixed by the DGP.

The thought that they have been denied something they deserve is frustrating many of them.

Insiders say discontentment is simmering among many of them but they are helpless and hardly have any say in the matter. Even if they approach their seniors they will be frowned upon, say insiders.

Going by the DGP's directive, approval by the respective DIGs will be given to only those sub-inspectors, who have an outstanding record in the realm of investigation, those who are well versed with the art of managing a police station and have a good record in public relation.

Preference will also be given to those who possess good knowledge of law and rules so that no offender could escape without being punished.

Such a criteria was mooted for the sub-inspectors so that on the basis of their experience and knowledge they are able to solve intricate problems which they keep encountering during the discharge of their duty and are able to crack a case easily. The higher officers because of the presence of experienced station officers also feel relieved as they know that a particular station officer would be able to deal with the situation tactfully thereby saving their precious time in visiting a place of occurrence of a crime.

Experienced and approved station officers also know the art of devising strategy against criminals and carrying out concerted drive against them. The Police Department, it may be mentioned, also provides training for managing a police station and those sub-inspectors, who are approved by the DIG are the ones who have undergone this training.

When asked, IG zone AC Sharma said as per his knowledge there were only a few such instances in which charge of a station officer had been handed over to a sub inspector, who had not been approved.

However, he said he had written to the DIG in this regard and had also sought a reply.

On the issue of fixing responsibility in this case, he said the SPs and the SSPs were to be blamed for the lapse.
