Tens of thousands of people converged on the Murugan Temple at Batu Caves near Kuala Lumpur to pray during the official holiday declared by the Malaysian government.

The festival was also celebrated by the Malaysian Indian community in other parts of the country with various activities, such as hosting open houses for relatives and friends.

Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi released a statement on Tuesday, wishing all Malaysian Hindus a happy Diwali.

A national-level Diwali Open House will be held in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, which is expected to be the highlight of the celebration of the festival in the country.
