The resident doctors of KEM hospital at Parel went on strike after some of their colleagues were assaulted allegedly by the relatives of a patient who died last night, Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) spokesman Ajay Oswal said.

In a similar incident, some doctors were assaulted at Baba Hospital in suburban Bandra here on Sunday night. The doctors of the hospital have decided to proceed on strike, beginning this afternoon, he said.

Oswal said "as of now, we will give moral support to doctors of KEM and Baba hospitals. The MARD representatives are meeting the deans of the respective hospitals to decide the future course of action. During the meeting, the resident doctors will emphasise on the issue of security to the doctors."

The resident doctors in various hospitals across the city have been facing similar situations in the past two years but the authorities have failed to provide adequate security, he claimed.
