DOCTORS IN Lucknow have woken up to kidnap scare. Dr Jaideep Sircar’s kidnap is said to be the first of its kind in the city, while, such incidents are not new in other parts of the State, especially Kanpur, Allahabad and Agra. But the Dr Sircar incident has made them think over personal securities before the city goes the Bihar way.
Till date doctors in the city were living without fear, which is evident from the fact that none of the doctors had applied for security.
“Attacks on doctors have always been there and call for money is something which the doctors rarely reveal out of fear,” said the president of Lucknow College of Surgeons Dr K D Verma. Referring to Dr Sircar’s incident, he said, “Such incidents were unheard of in the city, but this incident shows that there is a high amount of risk among the doctors for ransom kidnapping.”
President of the UP Nursing Home Association Saroj Srivastava said the issue of security was being taken up regularly with the State Government. “But nothing has yet been done, despite doctors have to work at odd hours,” she lamented. She demanded that an emergency call number should be provided especially for doctors and even suggested that if a doctor is kidnapped the family should resist instead of succumbing to the pressure of kidnappers.
Hailing the efforts of nabbing the kidnappers of Dr Sircar, the Indian Medical Association’s honorary secretary, Dr Shraddha Singh said, “The timely action on part of the Lucknow police is commendable.”
She further stated that the incident had set a new fear in the minds of doctors in Lucknow, who were so far remained untouched from the scourge of kidnap.
The President of Indian Medical Association (IMA) Dr G P Kaushal said that the incident calls for stepping up security. He said that there were private securities at the known hospitals in the city, but they were not enough to provide security in wake of the current threat perception. Dr Kaushal advocated the need for approaching the government security agencies for help as per the provision of the law. According to a senior police officer, the police provide protection to the citizens on demand. “The citizens are expected to come forward with their grievances to the police so that we can take timely action,” he added.
