WITH THE Annual Athletics Meet just over, Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT) is now all set for the 10th Dr Jagdish Lal Memorial Games and Sports Festival. The inter-institutional event got underway at the Deemed University with its formal inauguration by Dean (Academics) Rakesh Mathur on Friday.

During the next three days, teams from various technical colleges including IERT, IIIT-A, Shambunath Engineering College, United College of Engineering, Moti Lal Nehru Medical College, among others, will compete against each other in various sports like volleyball, carrom, chess, basketball and badminton and vie for the top honours.
"The J Lal Sports Festival started off as a basket ball tournament and later transformed into a mega indoor games competition. The founder of the event was Prof Jagdish Lal, former principal of MNNIT, who is also known for introducing innovative brakes in the Rajdhani Express," informed Rakesh Narain, president of the MNNIT Students Activity Centre.
"Over the years, it has become an inter-institutional event in which teams from a number of technical institutions take part," he added.
He informed that each of the sport will be played according to league or knock-out basis depending upon the number of teams participating in a particular event. "We will be providing all the players consumable items like balls, shuttles among others," he said.
To ensure that the event is held smoothly and the players taking part in the tournament face no problems, MNNIT has appointed a number of student captains to oversee various events. Kamal Boro has been made responsible for carrom, Raghvendra Rao for chess, Isha Rana for Chess (girls), Pramod Joseph for basket-ball, Amlendu Kumar for badminton, Ankit Patel for Table tennis, Choden Namgay for TT (girls), Preeti Sindhu for badminton (girls) and Sakshi Singh for basket-ball (girls).
"Teams were intimated about the fest by January 11 and the hospitality desk began functioning by January 14 itself. The fixtures were announced on January 26," informed Pramod Joseph, one of the students closely associated with organising the fest this year.
Though the matches started on Friday evening itself, most of the fixture will be played out on Saturday and Sunday, he added.
The sports fest will conclude on January 29 with a prize distribution function that will be presided over by the MNNIT Director Prof Arun Baran
Samaddar.
