A 35-year-old drug addict set himself on fire in a police station in west Delhi and sustained 95 per cent burns, a police official said.
Police had detained Mahender, a smack addict, in the Punjabi Bagh police station on Thursday in connection with a small theft.
"In the afternoon, he poured kerosene on his body and set himself on fire. Initially, he was taken to the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital but was later shifted to the Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan Hospital (LNJP)," said HGS Dhaliwal, additional deputy commissioner of police (west).
Dhaliwal said the case was serious and that they would keep a tab on Mahender's condition.
However, LNJP hospital authorities said Mahender may not survive for long.
"He has sustained severe respiratory burns and, in all likelihood, will succumb to the injuries," said a doctor attending Mahender.
