Drugs worth Rs 50 million seized at airport
For the second consecutive day, contraband drugs worth Rs 50 million were seized at Chennai's Anna International Airport.
For the second consecutive day, contraband drugs worth Rs 50 million were seized at Chennai's Anna International Airport when a 41-year-old Thai woman was intercepted by customs officials, police sources said on Wednesday.
The Thai passenger, Charut Bansakone, was produced before a local court and remanded to judicial custody.
Bound for Bangkok by a Jet Airways flight late on Tuesday night, the baggage of Bansakone was searched and 4.9 kg of heroin was found concealed in the false bottom of her suitcase, the officials alleged.
Sources in the immigration department said the woman had admitted to staying in New Delhi for over a month "as a tourist".
Two passengers, a Filipina and an Indian, found to be carrying contraband drugs worth a similar amount were remanded to judicial custody on Tuesday.
"Though the drugs are produced in central and northern India, Chennai has become a major embarkation point for its carriers - especially to the Far East," a senior customs official told IANS.
A larger consignment of banned drugs was seized on February 26 resulting in the arrest of a 22-year-old Taiwanese national MM Nasser.
