Eight farmers commit suicide in Vidarbha region

The toll now stands at 1028 since June 2005, out of which 418 farmers took the drastic step after PM's visit in June-July.

Suicides by farmers in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra continue unabated with as many as eight more farmers ending their lives in various parts of the region, an NGO claims.

The toll now stands at 1028 since June 2005, out of which 418 farmers took the drastic step after the visit by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to the region in June-July, Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti president Kishore Tiwari said in a release.

The farmers were Govardhan Chavan from Jodmohar (Yavatmal), Raju Batuwar from Patanbori (Yavatmal), Tukaram Hiwrale from Chincholi (Akola), Tukaram Chavan from Sakharkherda (Buldana), Ganesh Aagwale from Isoli (Buldana), Shrikant Jagtap from Kaharangana (Wardha), Chudaman Gujrale from Tamaswadi (Nagpur) and Madhukar Kolaskar from Mana (Akola), the release added.
