LAUNCHING ITS tirade against non-payment of wages, the employees’ union of Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) under the banner of Karamchari Sanyukt Sangh, has decided to serve a 15-day ultimatum to municipal commissioner for redressing their grievances.

At a meeting held here on Thursday, KMC employees took a unanimous decision to serve a notice on Municipal commissioner Badal Chatterjee on Friday during lunch hours.
General secretary of the employees’ union Babu Ram Baghmar informed that in the notice to be served to the municipal commissioner, a 15 days time would be given for redressing their grievances.
“After 15 days, employees will be free to take any decision, including indefinite strike,” Baghmar stated.
Several leaders of the employees’ union also expressed their anger over the expenses being made by the KMC despite financial crisis.
President of the employees’ union Mohan Singh Yadav stated that no wages were being paid to employees at the pretext of high court order and financial crisis, but the KMC officials did not check their expenses.
“Renovation work is going on at KMC in full pace, expenses on diesel and petrol have also not been curtailed either by the staff of KMC,” Yadav stated.
He said that Allahabad High Court had not imposed any ban on payment of salary in its order. But Municipal Commissioner Badal Chatterjee had purposely withheld the payment of employees’ wages.
Enraged employees also expressed their resentment at the non-payment of wages even on the festive occasions of Diwali and Id.
It may be pointed out that Allahabad High Court had imposed a ban on all development activities and payments to be made by the KMC, including payment of wages to employees. The decision was given by the high court on a writ petition filed by the Pensioners’ Association of KMC. In compliance of the high court’s order, KMC had not distributed wages to its employees for the month of September and October.
The extent of financial crisis at KMC could be gauged by the fact that pensioners’ dues worth Rs 70 crore could not be cleared by the civic body.
