Energy co-op: India, US to hold talks on Feb 8
Shyam Saran will meet David Garman to discuss how they could cooperate in alternate energy resources.
Already engaged in the civilian nuclear cooperation talks, India and the US will hold high level discussions in New Delhi on Wednesday to explore ways for cooperation in alternate means of energy.
Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran will meet US Under Secretary for Energy David Garman to discuss how the two countries could cooperate in alternate energy resources to mutual benefit of the two countries, diplomatic sources said in New Delhi on Tuesday.
The discussions will focus on cooperation in hydrogen fuel, coal fuel and future-generation sources of energy, they said.
Garman is likely to meet some other officials during his two-day stay in New Delhi.
The talks on alternate energy are parallel to ongoing parleys on civilian nuclear cooperation deal being pursued by Saran and US Under Secretary of State Nicholas Burns.
Saran and Burns have held two rounds of talks since the deal was signed on July 18 during the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Washington.
The two sides are racing against time to implement the deal before the March visit of US President George W Bush.
However, with the next meeting between Saran and Burns before the Bush visit seeming to be unlikely, the deal is not expected to be implemented by the time of the visit.
The two sides, after the last meeting here on January 19-20, had acknowledged "difficulties" in the road ahead and indicated that negotiations could take a long time.
