This time, the trio possessed jewellery worth Rs 50 lakh, Rs 1 lakh in cash and a laptop.

Singh, 26, was nabbed by the Ghaziabad police with his wife, Mansi Negi, and friend, Sunny, from NH-24 area where they were headed for a holiday in Nainital in a stolen Maruti-Esteem car.

Singh, who had been lodged at Dasna jail since 2010, escaped on November 25, 2011 after bribing and sedating two policemen.

It is estimated that the gang has stolen around R2.5 crore worth gold items from various states since 2010. “After his escape from the lockup, the gang robbed posh localities in Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Mumbai. They travelled by air, stayed at high-end hotels and enjoyed a luxurious life with the stolen money,” said
Raghubir Lal, senior superintendent of police (SSP).

“They would check for newspapers lying outside, and dust gathered on door locks. This told them that the occupants had been gone for a while. Then they would break open the locks and walk away with the valuables,” the SSP added.

Mansi, provided the cover and helped them get easy access to residential areas. Following a tip-off, the police put Mansi’s mobile phone on electronic-surveillance when she approached a private company for a loan against some of the stolen jewellery.

Ghaziabad police is now preparing to hand over the accused and the recovered valuables to police officials from Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
