THE ISSUE of fake voting in the college union elections triggered clashes between the groups of supporters of the candidates in almost all the colleges this year. Despite the college managements ensuring transparency at every level of the elections as per norms students blamed them for encouraging fake polling in favour of certain candidates and clashed.

On the last day of polling VSSD, Maahila Mahavidyalaya and DG College went to polls. Although the polling was by and large peaceful at all the colleges, minor clashes over fake voting took place at VSSD and the Mahila Mahavidyalaya. At VSSD college the police had to intervene while at the Mahila Mahavidyalaya students themselves ended the confrontation.
Similarly, on the first day of polling in the four colleges including one girls’ college, groups of supporters of rival candidates clashed with each other apprehending fake voting.
Clashes also took place at DC law, BND and the Halim Muslim College but the police controlled these and no one sustained any injury. However, at the Juhari Devi Girls College exchange of hot words took an ugly turn when one of the supporters of a candidate pushed the candidate for the post of president. Since the candidate was pregnant she fell unconscious and was rushed to a hospital in a precarious condition. Though she was elected president of the college union she had suffered loss of pregnancy.
On the second day of polling at five colleges the worst situation was witnessed at the DAV and the DBS colleges where two groups clashed outside the college premises over fake voting. The groups hurled crude bombs at each other and fired with the country-made pistols. Finally the police had to intervene. They resorted to lathicharge to disperse the unruly crowd.
Similarly at DBS clashes took place on the same issue and over half a dozen students were injured.
