The death of Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah has dashed the hopes of the family of Vinod Singh Bisht, the man who attacked Sanaullah in jail, of ever seeing the man of the house again.
Vinod’s wife Manju lives in Siku village near Pauri with her two daughters, aged 10 and 7 years. the family lives hand to mouth, mired in poverty, helped from time to time by his father Mehtab Singh, an ex army man, out of the scanty pension he receives.
Vinod, who had joined the Garhwal Rifles in 1994, is serving life imprisonment for having killed a colleague with his service weapon in 2006.
“I used to cook food for students at a local government school but recently lost the job as the education department decided to close down the school owing to less number of students,” told a grieving Manju to HT.
Brij Mohan Singh Bisht, a retired honorary captain from Siku told HT that Vinod's family lives in dire poverty and his younger daughter is suffering from epilepsy and needs regular medication.
“The family is so poor that they find it difficult even to arrange money to go and meet Vinod at the Jammu jail,” informed Bisht.
However there are mixed feelings in the village about what Vinod did to the Pakistani prisoner. Some, including Brij Mohan, feel the attack was an ill thought out impulse and is destroying his family.
However, there are others who feel that Vinod had nothing to lose because he was serving a life sentence anyway and through his actions has avenged the death of Sarabjeet singh in a Pakistani jail.
However the vinod's family is in deep shock. When Vinod had shot his fellow officer, the matter could have been kept under the wraps and the fanily name salvaged. But after this present incident, there is absolutely no hope of ever seeing him again.
