Police said, the victims — Mugai Sirka (34) and his daughter Nitu (7) — were first assaulted by a group of villagers and then strangulated to death after their neighbour, Jhigi Gope accused the girl of stealing an egg from his house.

The incident took place in Pertaul village of West Singhbhum district, about 200 km south-west of Jharkhand, on Wednesday. But the matter came to the police notice on Thursday when villagers found the bodies in a nearby forest.

When contacted, West Singhbhum SP Akhilesh Jha said, the police have registered an FIR against six villagers including Jhigi Gope on the basis of statement given by Nitu’s mother, Sumitra.
