The father of a slain ex-Sarpanch of Hayatpur village was shot at on Thursday in an apparent attempt to put pressure on the victim’s family to withdraw the murder charge against an alleged killer of the village head.
According to police, Shiv Narayan Yadav, 53, was rushed to Medanta-The Medicity Hospital, where his condition is stated to be stable. Yadav was attacked by two brothers of Rakesh who has been facing trial after being arrested for killing ex-Sarpanch Rakesh Yadav on June 23.
According to eyewitnesses, the attackers — Mukesh and Manoj — are younger brothers of Rakesh alias Lilu. The assailants came on two bikes and a Maruti van and started firing at Yadav. Gajendra Singh, a police constable deployed for the security of Yadav, started pelting stones, bottle and bricks in order to make the attackers miss the target.
“As we heard the bullet sound, we rushed to the spot and saw that the accused were firing on Shiv Narayan, while Singh was fighting with them,” said a villager. The victim's family members alleged that they had informed police that the accused have been planning to attack them.
“We have lodged a complainant earlier, but police did not take it seriously," said Devendra Yadav, one of the family members. Meanwhile, police have set up a police post in the village where seven policemen would be deployed. Police have recovered four dead cartridges from the Spot.
One of the attackers, Manoj, also received one bullet injury. He is being treated in a private hospital under police's observation, a police officer said, adding that the other accused are yet to be arrested.
A case of attempt to murder has been registered against Manoj, Mukesh, Bhupendra and three others with Sector 10 police station, the officer said.
The ex- sarpanch was shot dead by four bike-borne contract killers on June 23. One of the attackers, captured by the villagers, was lynched.
