A woman allegedly strangulated her 15-day-old daughter and threw her body into a well in Sidhi district, police said. According to police, Rajni Sahu, 25, a resident of Rampur Naikin block, was upset after giving birth to a girl for a third time.

Rajni already had two daughters aged three and five years. Her husband Rajendra Sahu works in Gujarat.

When villagers asked her about her newly born daughter, she said the baby was missing. Village sarpanch Umesh Vishwakarma informed the police about the 'missing' child on Thursday. A police team recovered the girl from the well.

When Rajni was interrogated about the baby, she confessed to having killed her daughter, police said.

Sidhi superintendent of police Ruchi Jain Jindal said, "We grew suspicious when police recovered body of the child from a well. Rajni was interrogated who admitted that she killed the baby because she was fed up with poverty."

Police have registered a case against Rajni under section 302 of IPC and arrested her.
