At least five persons were killed and over 200 were injured when a tropical storm swept over several villages near the Sundarbans mangrove forests in south Bangladesh, police said on Sunday.

At least 3,000 people became homeless as the storm levelled more than 200 bamboo houses on Saturday night. Trees and electric poles were also toppled.

"The storm hit the villages with winds at over 150 kilometres per hour and destroyed almost all houses within a few minutes," said a police officer at Sharonkhola, 400 kilometres southwest of Dhaka.

Most of the deaths occurred in house collapses.
