"We immediately arrested Mukesh. He beat his sister to death because he didn't approve of her affair," said Inspector VB Patel, who arrested him.

A senior Gujarat police officer said the killing was a "routine crime, which can't be equated with honour killings in Haryana and elsewhere".

Pooja's sister Aarti Rathor told the police that "Pooja had eloped with her lover and had stayed with him for two weeks and then returned home. But, Mukesh was against her relationship and in a fit of anger, he started beating her with a stick lying nearby."
