The incident took place late Tuesday in Shopian district's Keller village, about 50 km from Srinagar. The gunmen fired at Shiraza Akhtar from point blank range.

"Shiraza received a fatal bullet wound in her head and succumbed to injuries before she could be taken to hospital," a police official said.

"Police rushed to the spot immediately and carried out searches in the village."

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack that came hours after thousands of people held massive demonstrations in Shopian town against a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) report on two women who were found dead in a village stream in May earlier this year.
