Situated in the equally glitzy J. W. Marriott Mumbai Hotel in Juhu Beach overlooking the Arabian Sea and boasting the same trademark over-the-top ambiance seen in Versace's recently redesigned boutiques in New York, Milan and London, the Mumbai space - which will stock the men's and women's collections, along with accessories and home goods - combines cream marble flooring, gray stucco "Marmorino" walls and a shiny white enamel ceiling, all of which serve as a dramatic backdrop for black lacquered furniture and sparkly Antelio crystal fixtures. Just the setting in which to make one's Medusa logo head dreams a reality.

"This important opening underlines Versace's strong commitment to expansion, inaugurating the presence of Italian luxury in India," said a Versace spokesperson. "Once again Versace demonstrates its trademark pioneering retail strategy in understanding and anticipating the possibilities of emerging markets before other Italian competitors."

While Versace may have beat its italian counterparts to the retail punch, on the international luxury brand front, Mumbai and New Delhi are already home to Dior, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Salvatore Ferragamo and Hugo Boss stores, with Gucci set to follow later this year.
