Reversing a lower court verdict, Madhya Pradesh High Court has acquitted five men who had been sentenced to death on the charge of murdering six persons in a diamond merchant's house in Panna district.
A division bench comprising Justice SS Jha and Justice Sushma Shrivastav observed that no innocent person should be hanged and hoped the police would conduct proper investigation and nab the real culprits for punishment.
District and sessions court of Panna had on March 27, this year, sentenced to death Sameer, Kishore Singh, Suresh Kumar, Mumtaz and Idris on charge of murdering six persons in the house of diamond merchant Mahesh Kumar Madia in August, 1997, while one person, Bablu was acquitted.
Quashing the district and sessions court order, the bench observed that there should be sufficient evidence to substantiate the charges levelled against the accused.
