There was blood in the area of the neck where the head had been decapitated. There were no other injury marks on the body, save a small strip of sticking plaster on the back. Forensic experts said that the girl had died less than 24 hours earlier.

CSP Padmavilochan Shukla said that police received information about the body at around 2 pm. They tried to get the body identified with the help of some residents of the area, but could not succeed. The body was finally wrapped and sent for post-mortem.

Though there was speculation that this might be a case of ritual sacrifice, Shukla said that they were not in a position to say anything till they received the post-mortem report. He said all efforts to trace the head had proved futile.
