The 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway, connecting Ladakh region with the rest of the state, remained closed for the third day on Thursday due to snowfall and slippery road conditions.
However, 55-km-long Bandipora-Gurez road, connecting the border town and dozens of areas near the Line of Control (LoC) was put through for one-way traffic this morning.
Official sources said the highway connecting the Ladakh region with the rest of the state remained closed due to snowfall between Sonamarg and Zojila pass.
They said a large number of vehicles, including those carrying passengers and empty trucks, remained stranded on either side of the Zojila pass.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, has pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the highway.
Vehicles would be allowed once a green signal is received from the BRO and traffic police officials deployed on the highway, they said.
We have not allowed any vehicle from Srinagar or Drass, the coldest place in the world after Siberia, for the second day today officials said adding that traffic from Leh to Drass was plying.
We expect the highway would be put through later today if there is no landslides, they said.
The highway was reopened only on April 6 after remaining closed since December last year due to snowfall.
One-way traffic was resumed on Bandipora-Gurez road in north Kashmir after remaining suspended for two days.
The road was put through after remaining closed for winter months due to snowfall only on April 15.
Officials said that traffic on the road was suspended as a precautionary measure because of fresh snowfall and heavy rains.
There was possibility of avalanches, they said adding the traffic movement will be resumed when the weather improves.
Today traffic from Gurez to Bandipora was allowed, they said.
