A series of hoax bomb threats, including one at Akshardham temple, and an e-mail to Delhi Police threatening to carry out an attack at the Red Fort on Friday made the police carry out searches at several places in the Capital.

Extensive searches were carried out at PVR Plaza theatre in the busy Connaught Place, Akshardham Temple complex in East Delhi and Gurdwara Sis Ganj after police received anonymous phone calls about bombs being planted at these places.

Bomb disposal squads and sniffer dogs were rushed to these places, but no explosive substance was found, police officials said.

Police sources said that they had also received an e-mail threatening to blow up the Red Fort. Similar e-mails were received by some TV news channels as well.

"Save Red Fort if you can. Fire works at 8.47 pm," an e-mail received by a news channel said.

Police also conducted random searches at various places, including bus stations and markets.

Security was tightened at vital installations, places of worship, monuments, markets, railway, bus and Metro stations across the Capital.

Police Commissioner KK Paul played down the threats and asked the media not to highlight such incidents. "Such incidents should not be given undue publicity," he said.
