IN A gruesome incident eight persons of a family were burnt in their house by unidentified persons in Burhanpur district today. Four of them are reported to be in a critical condition.

The Khandwa police have meanwhile arrested three persons and charged them with setting afire the house. According to Burhanpur Central Kotwali in-charge Venkateshwaran, he was patrolling the area when he saw a house behind a petrol pump near the bus stand on fire.

The police immediately alerted the fire brigade which reaching the spot doused the flames emanating from the single-storeyed shanty house.

A total of eight persons with seven grievously injured from burns and one slightly injured were taken out from the burning house. The injured were immediately rushed to the Nehru Government Hospital.

The burnt included owner of the house Badrunissa (45) her husband Ramzan (50), daughter Anisa (25) her two sons and two daughters aged between one year to six years, brother Hafiz (17) and another brother Mahmood (21).

Anisa, who is married to Abid Ali, had come with her children to her parents’ home for Eid. Badrunissa, Anisa, one of her daughters and Hafiz are said t be in a serious condition, while Mahmood suffered, minor injury.

Venkateshwaran said that according to information gathered from the spot, someone had poured kerosene with a can lying on the tin roof of the house through the iron grill of an open window. The kerosene also woke up one of the male members and when he tried to go out to investigate he fund the door barred from outside. The unidentified person/s threw a lighted matchstick inside causing the outbreak of fire.

It was learnt from neighbours that Badrunissa was allegedly carrying on an affair with an old acquaintance Maqsood. The brothers-in-law of Maqsood were said to be angry with the household of Badrunissa. The police believe that they may be the culprits behind this incident.
