A group of people, suspected to be BJP workers, on Sunday attacked Hurriyat Conference chief Mirwaiz Umer Farooq's cavalcade.

Group pelted stones and smashed the windowpanes of the separatist leader's car.

Mirwaiz escaped unhurt in the attack, official sources said.

BJP has organised a protest against Umer's visit to Jammu region. The saffron party is protesting his efforts to muster support for self-rule and demilitarisation.

The attack took place when Mirwaiz's cavalcade was heading towards Samba Rest House in Jammu district where he was scheduled to meet National Democratic Front President RP Sarar, the sources said.

Raising anti-Pakistan and anti-Hurriyat slogans, some 2000 people, suspected to be BJP and Shiv Sena activists, stopped the vehicles at around 5 pm and pelted stones at them, they said.

The windowpanes of the car of Mirwaiz, who was escorted safely by the police, were smashed.

The activists also burnt the effigy of Mirwaiz.

Earlier, on February 2, Mirwaiz's cavalcade was attacked allegedly by Shiv Sena activists outside Jammu airport.
