According to the director of the IIT-K Dr Sanjay G Dhande, since all the technical and engineering institute of the country did not have enough area to set up all the departments and centres for carrying out high-tech researches the IIT-K, which enjoyed sprawling campus would solve their problems, as it could extend its existing departments and the laboratories.

He said there was no need to construct new departments in other institutes. All the institutes could be connected with IIT-K through satellite service and the students could be given the benefit of on-line teaching and interaction with the expert teachers delivering the lectures.

He said there was a proposal to set up a ‘technology centre’ at Noida and a ‘research and development centre’ between Lucknow and Kanpur to promote on-line distant technical education.

He said the scheme would entail an expenditure of Rs 1.5 crore. Discussions were held with the State Government and the Word Bank has also agreed to finance the scheme for imparting technical education to the students at distant places.

He said at present the on-line education programme was started from IIT-K to benefit the students of IIT-Kharagpur.

The response to the programme has been commendable, he added. He said Madhya Pradesh Government has also sought assistance from IIT-K in introducing the on-line distant education system.

He said there was a marked scarcity of the engineering teachers in the country. Most of the engineering colleges did not have sufficient funds to invite guest lecturers or subject experts. But once the on-line education system was introduced these colleges would overcome the problems of the teachers.

He said there was acute shortage of good teachers in mathematics, mechanical and computer science.
