Slamming the UPA Government for India's vote on the Iran nuclear issue, the Shia community has said that the decision was taken under US pressure and it amounted to betrayal of Muslims in the country.

"The decision was taken under US pressure and has brought shame to the country," noted Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Javaad said.

Warning the Congress that it would have to pay dearly for this, the cleric said that the parties that consider themselves to be well wishers of Muslims should withdraw support from the Congress.

"We will not keep silent as the move amounts to betrayal of Muslims in the country," he said.

A meeting of prominent Muslim clerics would be convened soon to discuss the matter and chalk out a future course of action, Javaad said.

No government in the past took such a decision which was against the "popular sentiment" prevailing in the country, he added.
