Indian Airlines accused of scuttling Guwahati-Bangkok flight

The Federation of North Eastern Industries (FINER) has accused Indian Airlines (IA) of being biased towards the Northeast.

The Federation of North Eastern Industries (FINER) has accused Indian Airlines (IA) of being biased towards the Northeast. The accusation has come soon after the decision to re-introduce the Guwahati-Bangkok flight from January 2005.

FINER has pointed out that while the IA fare for the Kolkata-Bangkok flight was Rs 13,465, the fare fixed for the flight from Guwahati top Bangkok was fixed at Rs 17,410, thus defeating the entire purpose of the flight.

The Guwahati-Bangkok flight was cancelled some time ago for the lack of traffic. However there also exists a belief in Assam that vested interests in Kolkata are against the Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati becoming fully active for that would mean Kolkata being marginalised in terms of air traffic to South East Asia.

Raising its concern about the matter FINER has said that the fare difference created by Indian Airlines would be detrimental to both tour operators and tourists alike. The federation has demanded that IA reconsider the fare structure immediately, in line with the Centre's "Look East" policy, which was for the development of the northeastern states, as a base for relations with South East Asian countries.
