The department of trade and industry said India and China featured among the top 10 inward investors in Britain during the year.

Chinese investors created 324 jobs with 23 investments during the same period.

The sector attracting the greatest number of investment projects to Britain was software - attracting 76 projects.

"Amidst the concerns over call centre jobs going overseas to India and China, what should not go unnoticed is the employment opportunities created by companies coming into Britain from the US, from Europe and even from India," said Trade, Investment and Foreign Minister Mike O'Brien.

More than a third of the inward investment projects unveiled in the year came from US companies, with American firms behind 23 of the 67 inward investments.

The next most common country of origin for overseas investments was Italy, with five Italian investment projects announced during the year.

In Britain as a whole, a total of 811 investment projects from 40 countries were reported in the year. This was a 14 per cent increase on the previous year's figure of 709.

These investments created a total of 25,463 jobs.

Although manufacturing represents just under a fifth of the British economy, it accounted for more than 30 per cent of inward investment projects and some 40 per cent of jobs created.

The US accounted for the greatest number of investments in Britain during the year, with a total of 314 investments creating 10,668 jobs.

France was a long way behind as the second-biggest overseas investor, with 54 projects creating as many jobs.
