Indian settlers in Carribean Isles gear up for Holi

The Indian migrants in the islands will celebrate Holi, the festival of colours, in temples and parks earmarked for it in Port-of-Spain.

The Carribean islands of Trinidad and Tobago will be in all colours next Sunday as it is gearing up to celebrate Holi, one of the most popular festivals of the Indian-origin migrant community in Port-of-Spain.

The Indian migrants, who began settling in the islands from early 1840s, will celebrate the Holi or Phagwa, the festival of colours, in temples and parks earmarked for it.

Cultural groups have made elaborate arrangements to host the celebratios at strategic locations.

And Holi in Port-of-Spain is no response to the Carnival. It is a serious, religious festival, which demonstrates the eternal conquest of good over evil, said a festival organiser.

This is the 160th annual observance since the arrival of Indians to Trinidad and Tobago from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar from 1845.
