Jaitley attends cabinet meet after being discharged
Finance minister Arun Jaitley was back at work on Wednesday, attending the Union cabinet meeting just hours after he was discharged from a private hospital in New Delhi.
Jaitley, 61, has been admitted in the hospital since September 1 where he underwent a planned elective laparoscopic surgery to manage a diabetic condition.
Official sources added that Jaitley didn’t go to his offices Wednesday but is likely to go to offices in both finance (North Block) and defence ministry (South Block) next week.
The minister, however, will not be able to attend the meeting of finance ministers at the Group of 20 nations. The meeting will be held in Australia next week.
Jaitley is still undergoing treatment and is under rest, sources in the finance ministry said. Nirmala Sitharaman, minister of state for finance who also handles commerce and industry, will be representing Jaitley at the meeting.
However, he has been in constant touch with his ministry.
“He has been working from the hospital and he has even cleared files,” a senior official said.
Another source added that a few senior officials frequently met him in the hospital as Jaitley wanted to ensure that no important work is held up due to his absence from the office.
