Jaya Bachchan not to contest against Sonia: SP

The party would definitely field a candidate in the Rae Bareli constituency against Gandhi.

The Samajwadi Party on Friday dismissed reports that disqualified party MP Jaya Bachchan would be fielded from Rae Bareli against Congress President Sonia Gandhi

The Congress president on Thursday resigned from the Lok Sabha.

"It has been agreed in principle that Jaya Bachchan will re-enter the Rajya Sabha," SP Parliamentary Board chairman Ram Gopal Yadav told reporters in Lucknow.

He said the party would "definitely" field a candidate in the Rae Bareli constituency against Gandhi as "we have many other strong and capable candidates".

Pressed on the point, Yadav dismissed the reports of the filmstar-turned-politician being would be in the fray against the AICC chief in Rae Bareli, saying "yeh kewal charchain hain" (they are mere conjecture).
