While the retail sector itself offers a plethora of opportunities, one can also look at careers in ancillary sectors. One such sector is mall development. The mall culture is no longer limited to big cities.
With an increasing number of developers marking commercial space for organised retail in smaller cities, malls are set to enter an area hitherto limited to small stores and mandis. As a result, career opportunities in the phases of construction of these malls abound.
"In the West, retail is the second largest employer after the government, and India is fast catching up in organised retail space," David Fischel, CEO of the UK-based property investment major Liberty International, told the Hindustan Times.
"There is an explosion of jobs within the mall sector in areas such as architecture, mall operations, mall leasing and facilities management, to name a few," said Rajiv Bhatia, CEO of Inorbit Malls.
