Sources say Prof Mishra had conveyed his desire to be relieved of the proctorship to the VC verbally days in advance and the VC was actually ready with the name of Prof Jata Shankar Tiwari as his replacement and also issued orders in this regard on Sunday.

It is to be recalled that Prof HN Mishra of Geography Department took charge as the AU Proctor on March 15, 2005 after Prof Mata Ambar Tewari resigned from the post upset over the way the AU authorities had handled the case involving students who had attacked him and blackened his face on the campus. At the time, many a senior teachers had shied away from taking up the charge of Proctor in light of the volatile situation existing on the campus.

"I am quite satisfied with the way I handled my responsibilities as the Proctor. Now that the AUU elections as well as the major exams are over, I want to return to academic and research work that has got neglected during the past one year," Prof Mishra said.
