According to police, the accused, Manoj Yadav, was arrested from Lucknow. His criminal life started in 1992 when he killed one Rajendra Sharma and his brother Pradeep in Indra Nagar in Ujjain. Rajendra’s sister Mamta too was attacked in the incident.

She was pregnant and lost her baby. The brutal killings were committed over some feud between Manoj and his friend Rajendra Sharma. Manoj Yadav was sentenced to a life term in jail and was sent to Central Jail at Indore.

He took advantage of parole but reported late and was presented before the ADJ court in Ujjain on November 16, 2000. Manoj escaped from police custody from Bhandari Mill Square in Indore in the evening. The case is still pending at Malharganj police station there.

After the escape, Manoj went to Agra and started living there under the assumed name of Ajay Sharma. From Agra, he fled with an 18-year-old woman, Lata Sindhi, and reached Haridwar. Here he assumed the identity of Gopal Sharma and got the job of driver at the ashram of Swami Premanand Saraswati.

He also managed to get driving licence and voter identity card on fake name. On August 6, 2003, Manoj strangulated Premanand Saraswati and went to Bikaner in Rajasthan. Here, he was living with Lata when some dispute occurred between. Manoj then killed Lata and absconded.

Ujjain police had received information that Manoj was living in Lucknow, following which a team comprising CSP Rajesh Mishra, SI Ajit Tiwari, Anil Singh Chouhan and others nabbed him on Sunday from Lucknow railway station.
Manoj is the son of retired State police officer Badan Singh Yadav who had served as Additional Superintendent at Indore and as CSP in Ujjain.
