The state government has now formally transferred 97.69 acres of land to the central government for setting up an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rae Bareli.
It is now expected that United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi may lay the foundation stone of the premier institute in the near future.
The institute will come up near the closed Nandganj Sihori Sugar Mill at Munshiganj, five kilometres from Rae Bareli city on the Lucknow-Allahabad highway.
The 90-year lease deed of the land was registered in favour of the union health and family welfare ministry at the district registration office, Rae Bareli, on Tuesday.
The deed was registered in the presence of Rishikesh, deputy secretary in the medical education and training department of the state government, and Amit Srivastava, section officer, the union health and family welfare ministry.
The step comes just a month and a half after chief minister Akhilesh Yadav had said in Lucknow on June 7 that land would be transferred for the AIIMS at Rae Bareli.
After the chief minister's statement, Nandganj Sirohi executive director VK Kaithwar had transferred the land of the mill to the department of medical education and training, UP government, on June 10.
After that, a Central government team inspected the land and gave orders to the district administration to complete its demarcation at Dariyapur.
