Ganesh, a leader of the Communist Party of India-Marxist Leninist (CPI-ML) New Democracy, was killed in a gun battle on Tuesday afternoon in Bukkchintalapalli village in Warangal district, police said.

Police also recovered a self-loading rifle from the scene of the shootout.

However, villagers alleged that police arrested Ganesh and later killed him in cold blood.

Tension prevailed in the village after residents attacked police and demanded that they be allowed to see the body. Police opened fire in the air to disperse the villagers.

CPI-ML New Democracy is one of the splinter groups of CPI-ML and active in parts of the state's Telangana region.
