LeT militant behind sarpanch killing arrested

The police on Friday claim to have arrested a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant involved in the killing of a sarpanch in north Kashmir's Baramulla district.

The police on Friday claim to have arrested a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant involved in the killing of a sarpanch in north Kashmir's Baramulla district.

According to police spokesman in Srinagar, the Baramulla police arrested the LeT militant who was involved in the killing of sarpanch Ghulam Mohammad Yatoo, a resident of Raipora Palhalan, Baramulla district.

The spokesman said the LeT man was arrested in a joint operation of the Baramulla police, the army's 29 RR and CRPF's 45 Battalion at Raipora village, Palhalan, Baramulla. The police did not disclose the date of his arrest.

The police said the LeT militant, identified as Mohammad Altaf Ganie alias Cheema, a resident of Raipora, Palhalan, was involved in the killing of Yatoo.

"However, Cheema's other accomplice in the killing Shabir Ahmed Sheikh alias Shaka is still at large," said the spokesman.

The police claim to have recovered one AK-47 rifle, four AK magazines, 192 rounds of AK ammunition, one pistol, four pistol rounds, one pouch, one wireless set and 32 improvised explosive device circuit packs during the operation.
