The new wage structure will give the overworked constabulary a hike of around Rs 1,000 per month. It will also make the state the highest paying employee in the country for the policemen. So far, Punjab has been paying its police constabulary the best salary in the country in the range of Rs 3,120 per month.

The state’s decision to hike the police constables was cleared by the cabinet on Monday; the raise in their salaries is in the range of Rs 3,200 to 4,900 per month. Over 75,000 constables will also be granted a special allowance of Rs 500 per month. This was announced by Deputy Chief Minister RR Patil on Monday.

Salaries for police constables in the country:
Madhya Pradesh/ Delhi/ Rajasthan/ Tamil Nadu Rs 3,050 -Rs 4,590
Gujarat Rs 2,750 - Rs 4400
Karnataka Rs 3,000 - Rs 5,450
Punjab Rs 3,120 - Rs 5,160

The decision is part of the state home department's plans to restructure and modernise the police force in the wake of the spur in the terrorist activities in Mumbai and other parts of the state. The department is also implementing a revival plan prepared by consultants Mckinsey and Company.

The salary hike is likely to get implemented from October 1 and hopefully for the 1.40 lakh beneficiaries and their families will come in time during the Diwali festivities.
