Major killed in poonch gunbattle

An army Major was killed and a Colonel injured in a gunbattle between security forces and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Tuesday night.

An army Major was killed and a Colonel injured in a gunbattle between security forces and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Tuesday night.

Two terrorists were also reportedly killed. But their bodies are yet to be recovered.

Col Biplav Nath, an army spokesman said on Wednesday that five soldiers were also injured in the encounter, which took in the Beri Rakh forest area of the district, about 220 km from here.

"Major Amit Kumar Thenge of 37 Rashtriya Rifles was killed and six others injured in an encounter," he said, adding that condition of injured was stable.

He said, "The exchange of fire is still continuing. The army is carrying out a search operation in the area to find the terrorists who are still hiding in the thickly forested area."

According to the police, the army received information about the presence of infiltrators in the area about five days back.The army launched a search operation along with the police. Major Thange, a resident of Chhindwara district in Madhya Pradesh, was commissioned on June 9, 2007.
