Malay to host int'l cooking awards

The country will host the Gourmand World Media Awards, held for the past ten years in Europe.

Malaysia is set to enter the history books again as the Gourmand World Media Awards, held for the past ten years in Europe, will be held in Kuala Lumpur this year.

"The event which honours those in the culinary publication and media industry will be held at the Palace of The Golden Horses in Kuala Lumpur from May 17 to May 21," announced Northern state of Kedah Tourism Director, Ammar Abdul Ghapar.

"More than 800 participants comprising culinary professionals, celebrities, chef, cookbook authors, publishers, televisions taff and food critics will be present during the award presentation," he said.

Malaysia will also host 200 international celebrity chefs and foreign and local media in Langkawi, Penang, Sabah, Sarawak, Terengganu and Kuala Lumpur during a pre-event programme called 'Showcase Malaysia'."

Well-known chefs from Malaysia as Chef Wan, Florence Tan, Celine Marbeck and Chef Shukri will be among the celebrities to demonstrate their culinary skills through masterclasses, he said when contacted on Thursday.

Other activities include cultural exhibition, the Gourmand World Cookbook Library and Gourmand Cooking & Travel Multimedia exhibition.

The participants expected to visit Langkawi this Sunday will also have the opportunity to visit interesting places such as the Sungai Kilim mangrove as well as enjoy cable car rides and participate in cooking demonstration by hotel chefs, Ammar said.
