MALLS aren’t becoming the ultimate retailing destination for all consumer durables and mid-sized apparel manufacturers setting up new retail formats in the city.
The prohibitive cost of setting up a store in malls has led to a flood of old apparel and consumer durables showrooms being refurbished by their owners for ensuring higher footfalls, especially in Hazratganj, Gomti Nagar, Kapoorthala and Bhoothnath markets in the city.
On Sunday, a lifestyle showroom “Enhance” was inaugurated by UP chief secretary N C Bajpei at Vikas Khand in Gomti Nagar selling exclusive artifacts, paintings and designer collections of Lakshmi-Ganesh idols imported from as far as Egypt and parts of south-east Asia.
The Ludhiana-based Priknit Apparels Pvt Ltd is opening three exclusive showrooms in the city on a single day shortly at Indira Nagar, Alambagh and Gomti Nagar with one of its outlets at Bhoothnath market inaugurated yesterday. The Godrej Group recently opened an exclusive lifestyle store in Hazratganj with its line of global quality furniture and the global retailer E-MART set up its exclusive retail format in Aliganj, which has the products of most global names in consumer electronics sector.
Consumer durables major Samsung India has also been focusing on individual retail formats to sell its fully digital home concept in the city.
During the past six months, at least 15 showrooms had been inaugurated in the city which had traditionally been large multi-branded garment stores now donning the new cap as branded outlets selling product line of a single manufacturer not necessarily from the apparel industry.
A total of three new commercial complexes in the Bhootnath market alone have more number of branded apparel stores established during the past three months than in any other location in the city. A host of refurbished showrooms in Hazratganj have undergone a complete facelift with a sizeable area being earmarked for consumer durables companies to showcase their latest range of products hitting the market.
Overall, showrooms are being reinvented as small exclusive retail formats with a look and appeal of any mid-sized mall in the country.
The other major trend being witnessed in the city is an increasing tendency among the prime property owners in Hazratganj and Bhoothnath markets to demolish their old shops and construct small shopping complexes with a large flood space devoted to branded stores. The analysts keeping tabs on the retailing formats say that the stores located in busy market streets receive more footfalls in a week than most malls in the city anywhere in the country.
