Khursheed Alam raped his 17-year-old granddaughter on Tuesday in Hargoan town in Bijnor, some 350 km from Lucknow.

"Alam raped his granddaughter while she was alone in the house. When the victim's sister-in-law, who had gone outside, returned home, the girl narrated the incident to her, who in turn registered a case against Alam," police inspector Abbas Zaidi told IANS.

A few months ago, the victim's father and three elder brothers had left for Delhi to work in a shop. After that Alam began living with his granddaughter and daughter-in-law, Zaidi said.

According to police, medical reports of the victim have confirmed rape.

While Alam, who has been booked under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code, is absconding, the girl is being treated at a hospital, where her condition is stated to be critical, police said.
