The skulls were found from the complex of Tombisana high school, a senior police officer said. It was occupied by the central paramilitary forces during the peak of insurgent activities from 1980 to 1999. Many youth were stated to have either disappeared or arrested by the forces at that time.

Various social organisations including Families of Involuntary Disappeared Association Manipur (FIDAM) have urged chief minister O Ibobi Singh to pass order for stopping the digging of the complex ground and order a judicial inquiry into the incident.

General secretary of the FIDAM Md. Baniyaima told reporters that this period roughly coincided with the time when 'enforced disappearnce' was frequent in Manipur.

Local dailies published in front page photos of the skulls while various organisations demanded the DNA tests of the same, official sources said.
