Manmohan Singh

Manmohan Singh was sworn in as India's new Prime Minister on 22 May 2004. He was born on 26 September 1932, in a village in the Punjab province of undivided India. He finished his Matriculation examinations from Punjab University in 1948. He earned a First Class Honours degree in Economics from the University of Cambridge, UK , in 1957 and a D.Phil in Economics from Nuffield College at Oxford University in 1962.
After finishing his studies, he taught at the Punjab University and the Delhi School of Economics. For a short while, he also served at the UNCTAD Secretariat. This led to his appointment as the Secretary General of the South Commission in Geneva between 1987 and 1990. In 1971, Dr. Singh joined the Government of India as Economic Advisor in the Commerce Ministry. In 1972, he became the Chief Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Finance. He has since held numerous many Governmental positions. Dr Singh served as the Union Finance Minister between 1991 and 1996.
