Taking strong exception to continued non-appearance of main accused in Mau riots Mukhtar Ansari in court, the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Mau has issued a showcause notice to the superintendent of Ghazipur jail, where the independent Uttar Pradesh MLA is lodged.

In the notice issued on Friday, CJM Anil Kumar Pandey said non-appearance of Ansari in the court has "delayed" the trial of the Mau riots case.

He also asked the jail superintendent to appear in the court on April 24 and explain as to why Ansari was not being produced.

Asking why action should not be taken against the jail superintendent for delaying the trial, the CJM has directed that Ansari be produced in the court on April 25.

Ansari, the main accused in the riots that broke out in the district on October 14 last year, had not been appearing in the court on the grounds of illness.
