High drama prevailed at Malabar Hill on Saturday afternoon when Charisma Anil Kadakia (25), an MBA and daughter of a doctor with the Brazil Consulate, committed suicide by jumping off from her lover's building.

According to Ishak Bagwan, Senior police inspector of Malabar Hill police station, who was a witness to the drama, he was passing the Walkeshwar road at around 1.15 pm when he noticed a young girl standing on the pulpit of the window located on the passageway between the third and the fourth floor of the Nav Jyot building.

Constable Vijay Shinde of the Teenbatti police chowky (of Malabar Hill police station) who was already there informed Bagwan that the girl had been standing there for the past 15 minutes.

"I was informed that the girl, who had climbed down the pulpit was stuck there as she could not climb up or come down as the height of the place she was standing on was approximately 10 feet from the window," said Bagwan.

"As I looked up I saw the girl, who looked decent and educated sitting on the pulpit with her legs hanging down. I went forward to try to stop her but it was too late. Within seconds, before I could summon the fire brigade, she jumped down and fell inverted on the ground and died instantly," added Bagwan.

When the police started investigating the reason behind the suicide they found out that Kadakia was in love with a resident of Nav Jyot building and had gone there to meet him. She jumped off the building, as she was unable to meet her boy friend.

Bagwan also said that Kadakia had just returned from the United Kingdom in May this year after getting her MBA degree. She fell in love with one Nipurn Doshi, who was doing the interior decoration of her apartment in Grand Paradi at Kemps Corner.

The couple had been seeing each other since July. When the girl's parents came to know about the affair they decided to meet the boy's parents to talk about their marriage.

On October 21 the Kadakias visited the Doshis. The marriage talks somehow did not work out and the Kadakias walked out as they realised the status gap between the two.

On Saturday morning Kadakia called Doshi and said that she was coming to his house to see him. She arrived in Doshi's building at 1.00 pm. But she found that Doshi was not at home.

"According to the statement given to us by the girl's parents Kadakia was very short tempered. When we visited the spot we found the girl's sandals and her glasses on the staircase.

Although Doshi was not present at the spot we have detained him and questioning him regarding the immediate reason of her drastic step," said Bagwan.

When HT contacted, Doshi's relatives admitted that the Kadakias had visited them on Diwali day and the marriage talks did not work out.

"We had never said 'no' to the marriage but today we were not even aware that Charisma was up to such a thing," said one of Doshi's relative declining to name herself.

"I was in the house when I heard people from the opposite building shouting for help. Before I could come and save her she had already done what she intended to," she added.

Kadakia's were not available for comment.
